Trees are magical. For us, they’re a symbol of nature and life. They produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, cool the hot summer air, provide shelter for animals, act as a wind break, prevent soil erosion, and also unite people.

They also connected us, Zurich employees, with people from a number of organisations: World Wildlife Fund, OZ Prakoren civil association, Mestské lesy v Bratislave organisation, and Skutocné obete covidu (Real Covid Victims) initiative. Together with them, we planted trees in three locations last year.

Most trees were planted near Skalica, in the village of Hlboké, where the mayor started to plant trees together with his citizens back in 2014. In that year, each citizen had agreed to give up two percent of their land for the municipality in order to improve their village and the surrounding fields. They are affected by floods and erosion, while bare areas provide no refuge for animals either.

At Zurich we aimed to implement a project that would combine the aforementioned benefits, and thus we gave a new home to sixty original varieties of fruit trees.

The whole event organised by WWF was a great success. In cooperation with other companies and enthusiasts, we increased the number of trees in Hlboké and its surroundings to more than 600.
